However, none of them have stood out quite like NANA. I actually didn't like the whole Hachi x shouji situation much either, good thing it didn't last long though.Īnyway, I've read many many shoujo mangas. From what I can remember you haven't even hit the main parts of the story yet.

Splitter: I don't think you can really judge NANA based on three volumes. Overrated, personally, and I don't see any elements that would sway my personal belief to let it in. With predictable twists and Hachi still annoying and not really showing any promise of development, I still have hope for the manga, but right now, I'm really just praying it will take off.ħs acroos the board, and I'm not breaking tradition for the overall. Hachi with Nana makes me smile and think they have a great dynamic and this could be a fun series. Hachi alone makes me want to slam my head into a wall. The only exceptions are when she goes full-page like Nana performing on the kitchen table. Though the art is well-detailed and flashy, it almost feels too busy for its own good and there's too much to pay attention to in each panel. Judging by the way she draws and her flair for fashion, I can't help but feel she wanted to be a fashion designer, but I digress. I like him.Ĭan you say massive amount of detail? Looking at the characters and the designs, I honestly wonder if "manga-ka" was Yazawa's career of choice. Actually, I hope Yasu shows up a little more. Regarding the supporting cast, they're likeable enough that they don't bring the story down any further than Hachi does.

Yes, there are redeeming factors about her, but they're nothing other charcters of other series haven't done better. She's painfully naive in that way present-day "moe girls" are, only we're supposed to take her seriously. That said, Hachi balances her awesome with pure unadulterated fail. I think she's amazingly unique, clever, and spices up the story to a level of decency with her presence alone. "Hachi's afraid Shoji's cheating on her? Oh I'm sure he's not." and "Nana wants to restart her band? I wonder if she'll audition people?" Give me a break, and someone tell Ai Yazawa that reality isn't predictable.Īnd this story is all played out by an incredibly diverse but not necessarily appreciated cast. Realistic characters with realistic problems, but that doesn't mean I like it. Here are my ratings as I see fit thus far. I've only read three volumes of NANA thus far, and that's all I will be able to read before the voting ends for this series.

Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions.Īfter your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 4 elements then that's OK. If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pro's and cons, please don't worry. I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this:Īrt - discuss any pros and cons of the art styling used in the series, try to include some specifics.Ĭharacter - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to specific characters in the series For the next week I would like to have a discussion about the series that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate a manga: Art, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment.
